This Saturday, 30 April, is Queensday in Holland, an annual holiday celebrating the birthday of the Queen of Holland and an all around massive party. My friends tell me to prepare myself, and have let me know that I probably won’t remember much of what happened. I’m envisioning Mardi Gras where everyone is wearing orange and (hopefully) no one is flashing anyone. It’s a huge deal here in Amsterdam; everyone is in party mode and there is a city-wide free market (meaning anyone can sell anything, except perishables, on any of the city streets without a license or being taxed). Thousands of people crowd the streets while hundreds of boats cause traffic jams in the canals, all the while DJ’s are spinning in the park to provide the soundtrack for the day. I’m headed to Waterlooplein tomorrow to outfit J and myself in the proper orange attire. I’m a little worried about the fact I get claustrophobic in crowds...but hopefully I’ll just drink my fears into oblivion and won’t have a panic attack!
Have you been to Queensday before? Any unforgettable memories? Any advice?
