Not that I really need an excuse to go to a flea market but let’s just say it’s because yesterday was BEAUTIFUL!!! Spring is here people! I walked round with only one layer on...landmark! So, since there was absolutely no way I was staying inside I took a trip to the Waterlooplein flea market. Holy Snickers I think I found my nirvana!! On par with Italian flea markets, which only makes me even more excited to visit the Albert Cuyp (Amsterdam’s end all be all market), Waterlooplein is hidden treasure heaven. There are hundreds of items of various bric-a-brac strewn haphazordously across the pavement. There are your arbitrary tourist stands with XXX (the Amsterdam city symbol) printed on everything from smoking pipes to wooden shoes, there’s a stand selling spray paint for the local graffiti artists, one stand is selling old vinyl records, I even found a vendor selling vintage cameras (oh yes, I made a wonderful purchase! A new treasured possession.). There are over 300 stalls and you can find almost anything you’ve never known you wanted until you saw it. It smells....how do you describe a smell that makes you think of a certain time in your life???...it smells intensely of incense...the good kind, not the kind you would find at Hot Topic but the kind you get from World Market. It’s bustling, with the sounds of street music being drowned out by the calls of vendors trying to offer passersby the best deal, in short it’s part of the pulse of the city.
Check out the Waterlooplein Photo Album for lots more photos!!!
